Belthangady villagers against HP's gas pipeline

Hindustan Oil in Belthangady seeking land to consider LPG to Bangalore

It had been a feeling of dj vu for that villagers in Belthangady taluk  from Neriya, Dharmasthala, Koyoor, amongst others  who collected here on Thursday to voice their opposition from the lounging of, another, pipeline through their fields.

The Rs. 660-crore, 397-km liquefied oil gas (LPG) pipeline project, to become carried out by Hindustan Oil Corporation Limited (HPCL) from Mangalore to Bangalore, via Hassan, goes across 12 towns within the taluk.

On August 17, Neriya citizens threatened to show violent within the project. After this, a conference occured, although under police presence, among Hindustan Oil authorities, political reps, taluk administration and villagers here on Thursday.

However, even in the finish, the villagers positively opposed the work.

Bitter past encounters

A lot of the opposition comes from their bitter encounters in the gas pipeline which was laid there by HPCL/ Petronet after much protest in 2001.

R. Murali, Chief Manager, Hindustan Oil, stated because the old project had 18-metre-wide land (that's mandated legally for that lounging from the pipeline), the brand new project will need only 6 m if laid parallel towards the old pipe. The land is going to be temporarily acquired and handed back.

Scammed

However, Yadapathi Gowda, from Padubettu village, stated maqui berry farmers appeared to be scammed with this logic. They are saying you are able to only grow grain, and never areca and rubber due to its deep roots. And even when you grow grain, they level it without warning throughout pipe inspection, he stated.

Another reason for contention was buying of seven.12 acres at Neriya for any pump house which will propel the gas uphill within the Western Ghats. Furthermore, they feared compensation won't be provided to many maqui berry farmers who haven't received title deeds through the government.

While listing out the requirement for the work, Mr. Murali stated the present system of LPG transport by trains and were hard to rely on, costly, harmful and polluting.

Content management systems notice

Unconvinced by his declare that the pipes were safe, villagers explain frequent leaks occur and gas robberies. MLA K. Vasant Bangera stated the problem could be introduced towards the notice from the Chief Minister
