Postal dept offers facility for LPG subsidy in rural areas

NASHIK: The department of posts (DoP) has offered its services to the tribal department to open zero balance accounts in rural areas and facilitate the process of Direct Benefit Transfer of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (DBTL) for beneficiaries there. The department is considering rural areas as banks do not have branches there.

Shashikumar Sharma, the senior superintendent of the Nashik division post office, said: the tribal department had approached them for help but they were unable to do so, as there was a limit of Rs 20 to open a savings account. However, the ministry revised its guidelines on July 1, allowing the department to open such accounts."

"DoP officials have met with senior officials in the district collectorate, offering their services for the DBTL scheme. We have drawn their attention to the fact that the DoP has a reach in most tribal areas and will facilitate the direct benefit transfer to the beneficiaries," Sharma said.

Officials from the collectorate, however, said that the matter was not being considered by the state government as post offices were not linked with core banking services ( CBS) and was not mapped with the National Payment Corporation of India (NPIC).

"Private cooperative banks fulfilling these conditions have been included in the services," an official from the collectorate said.

"In Andhra Pradesh, the DoP is preferred for any kind of DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). In Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the DoP is among the list of the banks, where such accounts can be opened. We discussed the matter with the collectorate, drawing their attention towards the fact that the DoP has a reach in most tribal areas and will only facilitate the direct benefit transfer to the beneficiaries"
